Irvin opportunity for a fresh start
I am writing to express my support of Richard Irvin for mayor of Aurora. The April 7 election is our opportunity for a much needed fresh start in City Hall.

I first met Richard many years ago when we were both prosecutors here in Aurora. Richard was born and raised on the East Side, served in combat in Desert Storm, got his law degree and returned to Aurora to fight the same type of crime that surrounded him as a youth. When we met, he was working as the community prosecutor, developing the Weed & Seed Program. This program was designed not just to prosecute criminals after the fact, but to remove conditions and incentives that make the criminal life attractive in the first place. It is this type of proactive, comprehensive approach to problem solving that Richard will bring to the mayor's office.

After leaving the state's attorney's office, Richard opened his own law firm here in Aurora. He and his associates and staff work to solve the problems of members of our community every day. This experience, combined with the experience of running a small business in this city, gives Richard a breadth of perspectives on our city that the other candidates cannot match.

I have had the honor of seeing Richard Irvin at work in the courtroom, in his law office, as an alderman, and as a candidate for mayor. I have had the pleasure of getting to know him and his family as friends. In each capacity I have found Richard to be intelligent, hard working, dedicated and considerate of others.

As mayor, he will be a unifying presence, a progressive leader and will continue to be a dedicated public servant. I will be proud to vote for Richard Irvin for mayor and urge my fellow Aurorans to vote for him as well.

Supports Richard Irvin for mayor of Aurora
As a DuPage County Aurora resident, I pay over twice as much in property tax as our neighbors in Naperville who are in the same school district.

This is only the first of many unfavorable comparisons with nearby communities, which hurts all of us. I have long wondered why our city's leaders have been unable to leverage our great location, abundant natural resources, and diverse population to develop a thriving and vibrant community.

Today I was heartened to see mayoral candidate Richard Irvin's Economic Blueprint for Aurora to cut taxes to create a pro-growth climate, to reinvigorate our downtown, to emphasize local preference in city contracting and to commit to high-quality education for work-force development.

I think he understands that our city needs to be a partner to business to grow our revenue base and create jobs. As a small business owner he understands what businesses need from local government to succeed. Aurora needs change, Aurora needs Richard Irvin for mayor.

>RICHARD’S RESPONSE
Weisner disingenuous about whistle blowers
March 17 Letter to the Editor

In response to the Beacon News Article "Fact-checking the mayoral debate" on March 14, I was trying to make clear the point that Mayor Weisner only introduced a Whistle Blower Ordinance after firing a whistle blower and being forced to hire that whistle blower back.

The whistle blower in question, Bob Reiser, was assisting the federal authorities in 2004, Weisner took office in May of 2005 and gave Bob Reiser his pink slip in May 2005. Weisner only proposed the ordinance to City Council in June 2005. The fact that Weisner talked about whistle blower protection in January 2005 and still fired Bob Reiser in May 2005 makes his campaign proposal of a Whistle Blower Ordinance even more disingenuous.

AN ABUNDANCE OF POTENTIAL
AURORA IS A WONDERFUL CITY WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF POTENTIAL

When people speak of the American dream, I know that I am a direct example of America's hopes and possibilities. My story is one of triumphs over tribulations and success in the face of unfortunate circumstances. Gangs and drugs were a reality in my neighborhood. I grew up in a household with a single mother who was raising two young boys on Aurora's East side in government subsidized low income housing. I remember a time when my mother held two jobs, one in a restaurant and the other in a mall retail shop, in order to put food on the table and attempt to instill a positive work ethic in my brother and me. With little supervision, I joined a gang following the example of other neighborhood boys like me because we believed it was right. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to recognize that that life was not for me.  My brother and friends were not as fortunate and would succumb to the environment in which we lived. I determined that graduating from East Aurora High School was my only way out even though I was not a good student and no one in my family had graduated before me.

After barely graduating from high school and searching for direction, I enlisted in the U.S. Army. The Army taught me discipline, honor and respect. I was later deployed to the Gulf War during Desert Storm and Desert Shield returning to Aurora a Decorated War Veteran. With the G.I. Bill and College Fund, I put myself through college and then law school. Upon receiving a Juris Doctor, I became a prosecutor in both the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and the Kane County State's Attorney's Office. Later in my career, I started a law practice just two blocks away from where I grew up on low-income housing. I now have a thriving law firm with a complement of excellent attorneys and staff that and I could not be more proud of them

It would seem as though my dreams have been realized, however I am sure I can give something back to my hometown.  And that is why I want to become the next Mayor of the City of Aurora.  Because I think I can help other Aurorans achieve their dreams too.  Aurora is a wonderful city with an abundance of potential. We are headed in the right direction, but we can do better. Our citizens' civic pride in our great city and the unyielding hope for a better future for Aurora continue to impress me and our leaders have a responsibility to match that level of enthusiasm. In life, we should all be willing to fight and sacrifice for what we believe in. I believe in Aurora and our citizens and I know they are worth fighting for.   I will talk about new ideas, a renewed vision and the prospect of new blood in the Mayor's Office to take Aurora to the future with a focus on job creation, crime suppression, and education.  My grandfather always told me "if we're not willing to fight for our dreams, what's the use in dreaming?"
